Know when to put the brush down

A mat is a tightly tangled patch of hair, not simply a bit of fluff sitting on top of the coat. Mats often develop where hair rubs together or catches under equipment. The first useful step is to stop and assess, rather than pulling harder until the brush moves.

If the knot feels dense, sits close to the skin, or makes your dog uncomfortable, contact a groomer. Do not slide scissors underneath it. Skin is easily hidden or pulled into a mat, making an apparently small snip risky. A professional assessment helps determine a suitable way to remove it.

Give your groomer clear information

Describe the size and location of the problem, how long it has been there, and whether your dog reacts when the area is touched. A clear photo might help the initial conversation, though it does not replace examining the coat in person. Mention any redness, dampness, odor, or visible skin damage.

Avoid bathing a tightly matted coat before getting advice. Do not test several tools or products in a rush to fix the problem before an appointment. If skin looks injured or your dog seems painful, speak with your veterinarian. The priority is your dog’s comfort rather than keeping a particular coat length.

Make prevention easier next time

After the mat has been addressed, ask your groomer to show you how to check the areas most likely to tangle on your dog. Common areas include behind the ears and places where a collar or harness meets the coat. A comb check, demonstrated by the groomer, helps you look beyond a smooth top layer.

Be honest about the time available for home care. A practical maintenance plan is more useful than an ambitious routine nobody follows. Agree on suitable tools, manageable session lengths, and when to contact the groomer again. If your schedule changes, revisit the plan. There is no value in feeling embarrassed about a knot when asking early gives your dog a more comfortable path forward.
